What is Semi-Independent Apartment Living?

Semi-independent apartment living is a step between full residential care and living on your own. A person has their own apartment and takes on more of daily life, such as routines, chores and personal responsibilities, while a rehabilitation team remains available for support, supervision and therapy as needed.

Irvine opened the Lahser Campus in Southfield in 1999, bringing outpatient and semi-independent apartment programs together in one facility. Patients who reside there can receive therapy in their own semi-independent apartment, so new skills are practiced in the same space where they will be used.

This kind of program is typically considered when someone no longer needs the level of support of a residential setting but is not yet ready, or not yet safe, to live fully independently. The amount of support is matched to the person and can change over time.

Our Approach to Semi-Independent Living

Initial Assessment

The team looks at which daily tasks a person manages well and where support is still needed, such as medications, meals, money, scheduling or safety.

Personalized Plan

Goals focus on the skills needed for the next step, and the plan sets out what support the team will provide and what the resident will take on.

Ongoing Support

As skills grow, support can be reduced. If needs increase, the plan can be adjusted, drawing on Irvine's continuum of rehabilitation and residential services.

Life on the Lahser Campus

Depending on the plan, support may include help with household routines, nursing oversight of prescribed medications, life skill building, leisure activities and case management. The specific support each resident receives is set out in their individual plan.
